Dark Ugly Places
4 Stars - The beginning of the book is terrifying/sad but it paints the picture of the trauma that Nicola has been though. The initial chapter alludes to a separate narrator/voice watching above Nicola as she experiences a traumatic hit and run that leaves her husband dead. The book follows the aftermath of losing her husband, and Nicola dealing with debilitating headache and pain in her leg. Her daughter survived but needed multiple surgeries that leaves her with a large

Dear Debbie
5 Stars This was a super-fast enjoyable read- I love everything that Frieda writes and this didn’t disappoint. A housewife has a “Dear Debbie” column in a local newspaper that she works on outside of raising her two daughters and tending to a beautiful garden. The book shows Debbie’s life through her daily activities of the gym, book club and raising a family. She seems like a good housewife but lurking down inside is a darker person that is starting to peek through her pu

Never Leave
4.5 Stars--Sophie moves to the big city of Toronto after leaving her sad previous life behind. She lost her mom and grandpa and for years helped take care of her sister while knowing there was more to life. Sophie works at a university library as an Archivist, she is the quieter type, still struggling with money like she was back home before college. She is friends with her co-workers and enjoys her job. Suddenly a well-known professor has been around looking for a folder

Death Sentence
How far would you go to know the truth about what people think of you? 3.5 Stars - This book brings up a lot of feelings, unease, dread, grief, love. Ethan attends the funeral of his neighbor and sees everyone coming forward to say good things about the deceased when no one liked him when he was alive. Walking home he begins to wonder why people don’t tell the truth before it is to late. He talks to another neighbor about this – Janet who has also noticed this same thing. Eth

The Neighbor Lied
3 stars- The book is set in a nice neighborhood that Claire has moved in to after getting a random message from her sister that she hasn’t seen in years. Claire is personally on the run from someone but in this case she is running towards someone or something- she doesn’t know what until she enters the gates of the neighborhood. I think the author had a good story line- just the punctuation and repeating of short sentences about the main events made it harder for the story to

Devil's News
2.5 Stars- The first chapter was a great way to get someone interested in the book, however I had a hard time getting absorbed in the rest of the book and read others in between. The main person starts a new job at a news station and on her first day there is a death. The book creates drama between the boss and the other news station employees to show it is a hostile environment. Later in the book someone else also dies in the office in the same manner. From that scene I knew

Dark Matter
4 Stars - This was a book club pick - not my usual genre so I wasn't sure what to expect. The story was about how one small change in your life can lead to so many different paths. The main character is a physics major and chooses a wife and son over advancing his career. In an alternate reality his cha racter chooses the career over a family. The successful physicist realizes what he is missing in life and creates a way to travel to a different universe if he had chosen

The List
5 Stars Another wonderful story by K-Mod. As a parent this book hits hard. A new couple expecting a baby moves to a small town despite multiple warnings to not do it. As a mom-to-be Jordan wants to raise her kid in a small town in a house with a yard instead of a busy city. After moving in and having a baby boy Jordan goes to the grocery store and sees people looking at “the list” she is confused what it means and everyone tells her those 6 kids will die soon. She rushes ho

Playing Jenna
4.5 Stars I love a good K-mod book, I was pulled in right away with the murder scene at the opening of the book. Initially I thought "Monroe" was young but as she identified herself as in her 50's i was surprised, I didn't expect the main character to have DID- the book mentions its very common but it isn't. I wish there was more explanation about why she went to "Monroe" and why she was an older lady. When things started to come out and the characters were all identified

The Arrangement
5 Stars—This was actually my second time reading this book. I read it a few years ago before I really knew who KMod was. I this book had always stick with me so I nominated it for my book club and was really excited to read it again. I love the different perspectives and even at the beginning it makes you question your own life, “would I ever do that?” A normal couple on the outside bit with dark secrets to hid. As the book keeps going there is twist after twist, the “ would

Nine Pines
4 Stars This book started out confusing. There was two different narrators in completely different situations/ nothing related to each other. It seemed as though it was two different books in one. At the end it does all make sense. The only thing that bothered me in this book was the narrators seem to "freak out" when nothing serious was happening. I assume this is to make the book more dramatic in a shorter period of time but in normal life things probably wouldn't esc

The Stranger in the Woods
5 Stars - Another twisty thriller by Kiersten Modglin. I usually do not read novellas but I love this author so i thought I would try it out. The start of this book gave me vibes from "the purge" based on the time of year and what goes on in Crimson Falls during this time. The book had mystery trying to figure out who the "stranger" was, some love, loss and twists as murders unfold in the small town. It kept me engaged and I finished it quickly!

The retreat-Review
4.5 Stars I enjoyed this, it was a good tension building story, there was elements of mystery, loss, grieving, deceit, paranormal and who-dun-nit. The book had good character development but there were quite a few to keep straight. The ending was something I never guessed. The bonus is that mark Edward’s always has a cat somewhere in his story!

The Great Alone: Love and Loss in Alaska
This was the first Kristin Hannah book I read and it was chosen for book club. A few friends said it was a slow read so I was fully prepared to have a hard time getting into it---but this wasn't the case! I found it easy to read and easy to get engaged in the story. A young girl and her parents move to the middle of no where Alaska in the 1970s. Knowing nothing about Alaska especially during this time period the author did a great job painting the picture of what things looke
